Barbie might be at retirement age (she turned 65 in 2024!), but her youthful can-do spirit hasn’t aged a bit. In fact, on the heels of her blockbuster eponymous movie released in 2023, the social and fashion icon is as popular as ever with a new generation of girls. More than just a doll, Barbie is a lifestyle, an attitude — and she definitely knows how to have a good time.
Barbie’s resurgence offers the perfect chance to fill a special birthday party with all the fashion fun and imagination that the Barbie brand is known for. Get ready for life in plastic to get fantastic with these Barbie-inspired birthday party ideas!
Create a dolled-up, decked-out Barbie world
As the Lizzo song lyric goes, “...pink, goes with everything,” so dive deep into a pastel palette to instantly create that Dreamhouse vibe. Barbie’s feminine style is perfectly brought to life with bursts of pink floral arrangements, including pink garden roses, tulips, pastel pink roses, and precious peonies. The Barbie Bouquet brings together all of Barbie’s vibrant and fashionable style with roses and orchids. Add a whimsical touch with pink splash roses and their cream-colored blooms, naturally striped and sprinkled in pink. A gorgeous Birthday Wishes Flower Cake (yes, it’s made totally of flowers!) makes a gorgeously girly centerpiece.
Go BIG on balloons to give that special dream-like feel to any location. The daisy balloon garland DIY kit is a budget-friendly way to cover lots of square feet in style. No Barbie party would be complete without a life-sized Barbie toy box, perfect for giving all your guests a chance to pose and snap pics standing inside the iconic hot pink package. Plenty of party rentals now have these available for loan, or you can use an online DIY tutorial to craft your own out of plywood or cardboard. Add a light-up number of the birthday girl’s age and disco balls to bring in even more bling!
Set a Barbie-inspired party table with pink tablecloths and accessories in a variety of opulent textures, such as tall dried pink flowers and bunny tails. Pull in fabrics like faux fur, sequins, velvet, and satin in every shade of pink for chair coverings, pillows, and drapery. Hang pink party fans from the ceiling, and set a fancy table setting with pink pinstripe cups and pretty pink and gold party plates.
Snack like a superstar
Guests will love snacking on pink chocolatey confection-covered strawberries. For a healthy fruit option, create kebabs with pink-hued foods, such as strawberry slices, watermelon chunks, and pieces of Pinkglow® pink pineapple. Don’t forget the pink drinks! Little fashionistas will enjoy sipping on pink lemonade or strawberry milkshakes, while grown-ups can indulge in pink margaritas and hibiscus tequilas.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a Barbie party without sweets. Create a grazing board packed with pink foods, from pretzels and marshmallows to Barbie confetti popcorn, sugar wafers, and pink foiled chocolates. Dish out Barbie birthday cookies, which feature the iconic Barbie silhouette, along with vanilla frosted confetti cookies. Combine those with some pink Barbie flower cookies and adorable pink ladybug apples and cake pops. A pink rose chocolate cake delivers a stylish showstopper.
Fun and games in Barbie land
Karrie Mueller, owner of the South Tampa, Florida, Parties with Character, a party planning and children’s entertainment company, has hosted several Barbie parties. She suggests a special guest appearance by Barbie herself to bring a Barbie party to the next level. This, Mueller says, makes for “unforgettable moments, like presenting the birthday girl with a Barbie BFF necklace during a special ceremony. It’s always so sweet to see her feel like she’s Barbie’s real-life bestie!”
Barbie is all about having fun, so pack in plenty of play to your party’s agenda. A pink bounce castle or ball pit will keep little Barbies-in-training busy while older girls might enjoy more refined fun, such as some DIY pink macarons baking time.
Mueller suggests hosting a Barbie fashion show, complete with a runway, which she says can be made with just a red or pink rug. “Provide fun fashion show accessories like feather boas, blinky rings, oversized sunglasses, and hats. The kids will love posing for photos and feeling like stars in their own Barbie-inspired runway moment.” She says you can also turn this photo op into a costume relay race. “Split the guests into two teams. Each team takes turns quickly dressing up in a skirt, shirt, heels, boa, hat, or other fun costume pieces, running to the other side of the room, then taking it all off for the next teammate. The team that finishes first wins!”
Play Barbie bingo, pin the sunglasses on Barbie, or musical chairs set to the “Barbie” soundtrack. Add a pink cotton candy station (with a rental machine or full cotton candy cart), or create a mini salon where guests can get mini-makeovers. Finish the day by giving all the guests a turn at whacking a pink unicorn Piñatagram.
Savor friendships with Barbie favors
Sending guests home with a personalized memento is a must. This could include a set of magnets or a treat bucket full of elegant essentials, such as nail polish, flavored lip balm, sunglasses, and temporary Barbie tattoos. After all the presents have been opened, have the birthday girl send thank-yous on personalized Barbie note cards.
